What is an almanac? - An almanac is a publication, usually an annual, containing a variety of useful facts of a miscellaneous nature, and statistical information.  Almanacs can be general (example, World Almanac and Book of Facts) or related to a specific subject or academic discipline (Almanac of American Politics or the Nutrition Almanac, etc).
