MLA Uses and Tips

Generally, MLA documentation and formatting is used by the disciplines associated with the Modern Languages Association (hence MLA). These include English and Foreign Languages. One would also likely use MLA in freshman writing courses (UCWR 110).

Tips:

  • Avoid footnotes or endnotes unless necessary to clarify material
  • Use in text, parenthetical citations with author and page number e.g. (Smith 12)
  • Create a "Works Cited" list arranging authors' names alphabetically
  • At the top of your paper, left-justify your name, instructor, course, and date
  • Number your pages in the upper right hand corner with your last name on each page e.g. Davis 1
