“Generative AI” is a broad term for any artificial intelligence program that can generate new or novel media, including text, images, videos, and audio. ChatGPT is a recent example of more powerful generative AI programs that can produce fairly complex and detailed writing in response to a prompt or question; it can also produce code, solve some types of problems, and generate images. While ChatGPT is currently the best-known example, other generative AI models exist, including Google’s Bard,  Microsoft’s OpenAI-powered Bing, and DALL-E. In this guide, we offer resources to help you learn about these generative AI programs, their potential impact on education, and how you can productively use them with students and in your own work.
