Primary Sources

The definition of a primary source from the Society of American Archivists' Dictionary of Archives Terminology appears above. In this class, you will be navigating between primary-source and secondary-source materials.

Primary-Source Materials

For this assignment, you will be using The Graphic and Illustrated London News. The library has physical volumes that you will be using, but here are other resources that you may find useful:

Illustrated London News Historical Archive -- Full-text archive of the Illustrated London News, a weekly illustrated newspaper. Coverage: 1842 - 2003. Here are some search tips for navigating this resource.
HathiTrust -- Some digitized volumes of Illustrated London News are also available from HathiTrust

C19: The Nineteenth Century Index -- Search digitized newspapers for more primary sources on your topic. This database also includes indexes and bibliographies (tertiary sources).

Nineteenth Century UK Periodicals -- Full-text articles from 19th century sources published in the United Kingdom.

Reserved Materials

The volumes that you selected to place on reserve are stored on carts in Cudahy Lower Level. Each shelf contains materials for a specific group or individual researcher. The cart location is indicated on the map below.
