Cite While You Write is a tool that allows you to create in-text citations, footnotes, and References/Works Cited pages in Microsoft Word. The plug-in will add an EndNote toolbar in your copy of Microsoft Word where you will be able to access your references and insert your citations within your document. You can choose the citation style for each paper and change formats at any time.
Cite While You Write can also be used in Google Docs. The instructions below are for Microsoft Word.
If you already have Word installed on your computer, the Cite While You Write feature will automatically be installed with EndNote. If Cite While You Write is missing, follow the instructions on the EndNote support page to re-enable it.
In Microsoft Word, click on the EndNote tab. Under Bibliography, select a citation style, such as MLA 9th.
Next, click on Insert Citation → Insert Citation.
Type in a keyword to find the citation you're looking for.
You will see a list of citations (depending on the size of your library) with the relevant keyword.
Under the Insert menu, you will see an option to insert the citation, insert the author (year), insert and exclude the author or year, or insert the citation in the bibliography only.
Selecting Insert will only insert the author's last name and the corresponding bibliographic (reference page) entry.
Deciding which option to select depend on the citation style and how the citation will be incorporated into the work.
