Use the library catalog to search for books at Loyola, and use Worldcat to search for books in libraries around the world. You can do keyword searches in each catalog, and then use limiters to narrow the results. To find books located in one of our campus libraries, use the Library or Location limiters in the library catalog.

These buttons appear in a number of databases when the full-text of the article is not there. When you click the button you'll see a display that lets you know if the article is in print or is in another database. If Loyola doesn't have the article at all you can request it through InterLibrary Loan.
InterLibrary Loan
InterLibrary Loan is a service that lets you obtain books, book chapters, and articles from other libraries. Articles and book chapters are sent as PDFs within 24-48 business hours. Books are sent through the mail and take 5-10 days to arrive. You can learn more about using Interlibrary Loan at the Interlibrary Loan page on the Library website.
Click on the PDF link above for a simple, one-page chart listing four primary characteristics of a peer reviewed journal article or scholarly book chapter. The chart suggests ways in which you may judge whether an article meets each criteria. This is not a definitive guide. When in doubt, always consult your professor or contact the librarian.
General Guidelines for determining whether a journal article or book chapter is peer-reviewed/scholarly. A link to a simplified PDF chart is at the top of this page.
1) The article is written by an expert or authority on the topic. The author typically has an advanced degree, and this is listed following the author's name.
2) The scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article or book chapter presents original, primary research, or provides an in-depth scholarly review of existing research on a topic.
3) The article has been reviewed by other experts in the field.
When an article is submitted for publication, it is reviewed by members of the journal’s editorial board or submitteed to referees selected by the editor for their expertice and scholarship on the topic of the paper.
