Loyola University Chicago Libraries

Accessibility

A guide to Library resources and services regarding accessibility.

Introduction

We want to make the library experience as comfortable and productive as possible for our visitors, faculty, staff, and students with accessibility needs. We are always looking for ways to improve, so please share any suggestions or questions with libraries@luc.edu.

Unfortunately, the library cannot make blanket statements about our resources. Vendors implement and remove accessibility efforts all the time, which makes it hard to keep track. Furthermore, accessibility within a specific service varies. For example, a database might have text-to-speech for articles after 2010 but not for any earlier.

Because of this, there are instances where we need to work with you on a case-by-case basis. But we are so happy to do it. We are here for you and we want to remove your barriers to access. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact libraries@luc.edu.

Finding and obtaining resources

The Libraries have a number of ways to search online for print and electronic resources, including the catalog, article databases, and research guides. Assistance with both print and electronic sources is available at the information desk on the first floor of Cudahy Library. To ensure staff availability, please make arrangements prior to your visit. Information about obtaining special materials follows below.

Closed-captioned videos

To browse videos with closed captions, go to the catalog search box on the Libraries’ homepage. Type “close* caption*” in the search field (including quotation marks), then hit Search. On the left-hand side of the results page that appears, find the Format Types filtering options, and click on DVD/Streaming Video to select that option.

Large-print materials

If you are Loyola University Chicago faculty, staff or student, and require large-print materials that are not owned by the Libraries, you may request them using our online interlibrary loan system ILLiad. In the notes section of the request, please say that you are requesting the item in large print for accessibility reasons.

Shelf access for wheelchair users

Many of the shelving aisles in Cudahy Library were not built to accommodate wheelchair users. If you finds a physical barrier while using library, please ask the Circulation Desk for assistance.

Alternatively, anyone with a Loyola ID can use the online catalog to place holds on desired items; these items will be available for pickup at the Cudahy Library Circulation desk, the Lewis Library Circulation desk, or at the IC Front Desk.

Study Areas

We offer a variety of study spaces, and have designated quiet areas. Study Rooms can be reserved ahead of time using the link below:
